Dr. Drew Pinsky, of syndicated radio's "Love Line," Discovery Channel's "Strictly Dr. Drew" and Vh1's "Celebrity Rehab," brings his unique brand of therapy to MTV in "Sex…with Mom and Dad."
Drew's goal with "Sex" is to bring families together while increasing understanding between teens and their parents about sex and relationships.
Dr. Drew begins the half-hour family talk by encouraging the teen to discuss his or her thoughts and feelings on sex. The "sexpert" then sends the family home to complete a few tasks, "designed to get them to open up about their sexual beliefs and experiences," according to mtv.com.
On the first episode, Drew deals with a mother who is fed up with her son's 40-plus different sexual partners and the fact that he disrespects her and her house rules by secretly having sex in her home. Drew advises Greg and his mom to show each other the locations of their most memorable sexual experiences. Greg's mother is disappointed and disgusted when she's told that he's had sex on the roof of his high school, near a dumpster, in an air conditioning vent and in the back seat of her SUV.
In the third episode, Richard, a gay man, confronts his mother about her attitude towards his sexuality and his boyfriend, bad boy Karim. The result of their conflict reveals that Jeanette's problem was not the fact that her son was homosexual, but that she didn't want to see her son get hurt by someone, as she had been in an abusive relationship herself.
"Sex" is an enlightening show. It's a shock to see how little many teens around the country know about the dangers of unprotected sex, as demonstrated in episode five when Tiara revealed that she didn't know that she could get pregnant or infected even if her boyfriend "pulled out."
Drew's exercises push the limits of what is or isn't appropriate for teens as well as cable television. In episode 10, Kayla, whose parents didn't know that she lost her virginity two years ago, has to play a game of "Truth or Dare" with her parents and learns that her mom's favorite place to have sex is the very shower that Kayla uses everyday.
Not only is the show informative for participants and viewers alike, but the families really do seem to grow closer through Drew's assistance. The teens are more willing to talk to their parents about sex and vice versa. They have a better understanding of each other's lives and ultimately gain a new appreciation for sex itself.
"Sex…with Mom and Dad" is a how-to show to get families talking about sex in a positive way. Tune in to MTV weeknights at 7 p.m. EST to see the improvements.
